Directed by conductors Mr. Chin K Yeung and Mr. Lin-Chang Yan, the Ottawa Chinese You-In Chorus is the joyful amalgamation of the two long standing choirs within the Chinese community — The Ottawa Chinese Choral Society and the Ottawa Chinese Cantabile Chorus, both founded more than two decades ago.

The group is made up of approximately 45 members, originating mainly from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. The repertoire is mainly Chinese folk songs.

The chorus has participated in many important cultural events and functions, and has performed at various hospitals and seniors' homes. Recently, the chorus members were invited to perform at the Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa as part of the Celebration of Diversity Concert. Her Excellency Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, was in attendance. Click here for a review of the event. In November 2002, You-In was invited to participate in the Ode to the Yellow River Symphony Night held in Toronto. Click here for a review of that event.

Membership, Practices & Performances

All music lovers are invited to audition for the chorus to determine their voice section. The ability to speak Mandarin is useful, but not a necessity--the chorus currently has many Cantonese-speaking members as well. Joining the chorus can be a very good way of learning Mandarin! It is preferable that members be able to read Chinese.

After having participated for 2 weeks, there is a fee of $30.00 per member per term, which covers expenditures for a 6-month period (rental of practice space, printing, etc.).

Practices are held every other Friday night at the Bronson Centre at 211 Bronson Avenue in Ottawa from 7:30-10:00 p.m.

Along with invitational performances, regular activities sometimes include a Mother's Day or Father's Day concert, an annual Christmas party, and Summer picnic. Practices are usually suspended for the summer months between July and September.

Auditions are held on an annual basis for new and current members of the chorus. Click here for a review of the last audition event.
